RATS! I CAN’T AFFORD PROPER FOOD
A few weeks ago we learned of plan in India to begin farming rat meat in order to help feed that country’s poorest citizens. But that’s not the only country that is rediscovering the joys of eating rat. Cambodian media reports that the price of rat meat in that country has quadrupled to around 5,000 riel per kilogram (about 58 cents a pound) putting it out of reach of poor people. Instead, the poor are now hunting rats in order to sell the meat to richer diners in Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. “Many children are happy making some money from selling the animals to the markets, but they keep some for their family,” said an agriculture official in Cambodia.
